YEREVAN. – Last year Armenia registered 1,222 crimes and 362 offense cases related to drug trafficking, head of presidential administration Vigen Sargsyan said.

Armenia has been successfully working with international organizations in the fight against drug trafficking, he said.

“Back in the early 90s Armenia joined the three UN conventions,” Sargsyan reminded.

At the same time he emphasized the need to improve the fight against drugs to a new level. Besides, it is a positive fact that Armenia is not a transit country for drugs, official said during a conference on illegal drug trade.

However, he said that over the past five years, Armenia registered growth in the number of drug addicts, although their number is not that large.

“Armenia is working with the relevant agencies of other countries. In particular, in October 2013 an anti-drug operation “Channel-Caucasus” was carried out. The operation was aimed at preventing illegal penetration of drugs from Afghanistan and Iran to the territory of the CSTO member states,” Sargsyan added.
