Governor Feliks Tsolakyan of Armenia’s Shirak Region had no doubts that the region’s Gyumri city wrestlers Arsen Julfalakyan and Artur Aleksanyan would become world champions .In an interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am, the regional governor jokingly noted that he would have been surprised if Armenia were to have a world champion from another region in the country.

“I watched both of their matches very closely. To be honest, we were expecting a win.

“In general, sports are at a high level in Gyumri; this is not new.

“While Arsen trains in [capital city] Yerevan, Artur continues to live and train in Gyumri; his family is here, too.

“I guess it’s from our soil, water that we [, the Gyumri residents,] have so many champions,” Tsolakyan said.

The Shirak regional governor will host Armenia’s new world champions in the coming days, and to congratulate and award them.

The Armenian national wrestling team won two gold medals at the 2014 Wrestling World Championships that wrapped up in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan. Accordingly, Greco-Roman wrestlers Arsen Julfalakyan (75 kg) and Artur Aleksanyan (98 kg) were crowned world champions for the first time.
