GYUMRI. – Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan (Armenia), who won a gold metal at the 2014 Wrestling World Championships that wrapped up in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, on Monday received a true hero’s welcome in his native city of Gyumri.

First, hundreds of Gyumri residents welcomed the “White Bear,” as he is known, at Gyumri’s Shirak International Airport and, subsequently, he took an honor tour of the city on a phaeton. Gyumri is rejoicing, informed the Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter.

Accompanied by Gyumri Mayor Samvel Balasanyan, Aleksanyan also prayed at the Surb Astvatsatsin (St. Mary’s) Church, and then joined his fellow Gyumri residents at the city’s central square, where they were celebrating his triumph.

In addition, a huge white bear was placed at the entrance of the Gyumri Municipality, and in the athlete’s honor.

This was 22-year-old three-time European champion Artur Aleksanyan’s first victory in the Wrestling World Championships. And during the post-gold-medal-match interview, Aleksanyan stated that, now, his dream is Olympic gold.
