YEREVAN. – The Embassy of the United States in Armenia is interfering with Mellat bank's work in Armenia, Iranian businessman and philanthropist of Armenian origin Levon Aharonian said.

This leads to problems for the financial operations of Iranian companies in Armenia. He noted that he has nothing against the scrutiny of banking transactions in Armenia, but the pressure on the Mellat is a different case.

Aharonian added that control over major transactions is an accepted international practice to combat money laundering and terrorism.

“They demand a lot of documents and explanations for each transaction, and we provide them. But when it comes to Mellat transaction, not only the Central Bank of Armenia, but the U.S. Embassy is interfering,” he complained.

Some time ago, he transferred money from Armenia to Iran through Mellat. On the next day, the Central Bank received a call from the United States Embassy asking for an explanation.
