YEREVAN. – Within the framework of his official visit to the Holy See (the Vatican), Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan also paid a visit to the Basilica of St. Bartholomew on the Island, in Rome.

The chapels of this church contain references about Christian martyrs, including the Armenian Genocide victims.

Sargsyan laid a wreath in front of the main altar of the basilica, and paid tribute to the victims, informed the Press Office of the President.

He noted that the Church has had a special importance and role in the history of the Armenian people. Sargsyan stated that the Armenian Church had assumed numerous statal functions during the years of the absence of Armenian statehood.

Serzh Sargsyan also stressed that Saint Bartholomew is considered a founder of the Armenian Church.

Separately, the Community of Sant’Egidio—which is a Christian community that is officially recognized by the Catholic Church as a “Church public lay association”—gave a dinner in honor of the President of Armenia.
