YEREVAN. – Armenia’s first volunteer military unit, the Special Regiment, was the foundation for the creation of the Armenian army.

Special Regiment Deputy Commander Vahagn Chibukhchyan noted the abovementioned at a press conference on Friday, and on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the regiment.

In turn, Special Regiment Deputy Commander, Colonel Mikayel Apresyan, stated that during the years of the Nagorno-Karabakh War, the regiment had conducted military operations in the Shahumian Region and, “solved its tasks put before by its homeland, people, and God.”

“During its formation in 1991, the Special Regiment had 2,750 soldiers, and we had 174 dead in battles,” Apresyan stated.

He added that nineteen members of the Special Regiment were decorated with the Order of the Military Cross.

At present, the Special Regiment collaborates with the Ministry of Defense, and it has a veterans association.
