The Scottish referendum is a classic example of the exercising of the right of peoples to self-determination.

Armenia National Assembly (NA) Vice-Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov, who is in the Czech Republic on an official visit, stated the aforesaid Monday at his meetings with Czech Deputy FM Martin Tlapa, and Czech Senate Committee on EU Affairs Chairperson Miroslav Krejča.

The Armenian NA deputy chair expressed the hope that the Armenian delegation’s visit to the Czech Republic will become an additional stimulus for the development of Armenian-Czech relations and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation.

Sharmazanov noted that the Armenia-European Union joint declaration has reaffirmed Armenia’s readiness to continue the reform process in the country. The Czech party, for its part, expressed willingness to assist in the consolidation of democracy in Armenia.

The Armenia parliament vice-speaker gave a positive assessment to the Czech authorities’ balanced position regarding the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Sharmazanov stressed that the right to self-determination is a fundamental precept in the settlement of this conflict. In this context, he reflected on the recent Scotland independence referendum and noted that this plebiscite is a classic example of the exercising of the right of peoples to self-determination.

In their turn, the other members of the Armenian NA delegation underscored the need to further expand interparliamentary ties.

At the end of the talks, Eduard Sharmazanov invited Martin Tlapa and Miroslav Krejča to the international conference, titled “Against the Crime of Genocide,” which will be held on April 22 and 23, 2015, in Armenia’s capital city Yerevan.
