YEREVAN. – The blowing up of the Holy Martyrs Armenian Church in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, fits into the logic of the actions by the Islamic State terrorist organization; this action was done intentionally. Arab Studies specialist Armen Petrosyan stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Tuesday.

As per Petrosyan, such actions by the Islamic State—and numerous other terrorist organizations—aims to make the international community focus on their activities.

“It is predictable that this process will continue. And with such actions, the Islamists [also] aim to inform about their activities also the youth living in different parts of the world and who are imbued with ultra-radical Islamic ideology,” the Arab Studies specialist stressed.

According to Petrosyan, even though it is difficult to find direct evidence of Turkey’s possible role in the blasting of the aforementioned Armenian church in Syria, there is a logical connection.

First, one of the Turkish authorities’ objectives to get involved in the Syrian conflict was the complete destruction of the Syrian-Armenian community, which is the closest to the historical [Armenian] homeland, and its spiritual and cultural wealth.

“And Turkey is still the only country that has formally talked with the Islamic State,” Armen Petrosyan concluded.
