YEREVAN. – Judging by Armenia’s Eurasian Economic Union accession agreement, this process will not harm the business of ruling party PM and oligarch Samvel Aleksanyan because, from 2015 to 2025, the imported raw sugar for processing will be exempt from customs duties, 168 Zham daily reported.

“And the Lusastgh Sugar [company], which belongs to Aleksanyan, imports non-processed sugar, which is sold after passing the last production cycle [in Armenia].

“The thing is that a 10 percent customs duty (this totals $60-65 for one ton) is in effect in Armenia for the importing of ready sugar. But pursuant to the CU [i.e., Customs Union] Customs Code, an average of $250 is charged for one ton of [such] sugar. No privileges are envisioned for the importing of ordinary sugar.

“That is, the importing of ready sugar will cost more, and this means that the monopolistic positions of Samvel Aleksanyan’s business will strengthen,” 168 Zham wrote.
