YEREVAN. – Pursuant to the technical agreement on cooperation, which Armenia and Italy have signed within the framework of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a thirty-member platoon—with two officers—will be sent from Armenia to Lebanon.

Artak Zakaryan, Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, stated the above-said at the parliament on Tuesday.

Zakaryan also informed that, as part of the Italian peacekeeping unit, the Armenian peacekeepers will be in southern Lebanon, and they will ensure the security of the local UN facilities.

He added, however, that the said agreement may also require certain financial obligations from Armenia, but they will be reimbursed sometime thereafter.

Zakaryan noted that this document was discussed by all interested agencies, and his committee endorsed this agreement.

In turn, Koryun Nahapetyan, Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs, said that this document has military and political significance for Armenia.

“From the political point of view, the agreement is important considering Armenia’s interests in the Middle East.

“Armenia’s participation in the UN peacekeeping mission will have a positive impact on the country’s standing, too,” Nahapetyan concluded.
