YEREVAN. – Armenian National Assembly (NA) Speaker Galust Sahakyan on Tuesday received a delegation led by President Karolos Papoulias of the Hellenic Republic.

Sahakyan underscored the friendship of the Armenian and the Greek peoples. In his view, the Greek president’s current visit to Armenia will contribute to the further deepening of Armenian-Greek friendship and political discourse.

He stated that bilateral interparliamentary relations are developing rather actively, but Armenia is interested in promoting multilateral interparliamentary cooperation, too.

The Armenia NA leader noted that the two countries’ positions on their challenges—that is, the Nagorno-Karabakh and the Cyprus issues—do not conflict with each other.

In Sahakyan’s words, Armenia highlights cooperation with Greece also in terms of relations with the European Union.

Speaking on the Karabakh conflict, Galust Sahakyan noted that the Armenian authorities wish to resolve it peacefully, and under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

Reflecting on Armenia-Turkey relations, the parliament chairman said that the international community is aware that Armenia always comes up with respective constructive initiatives.

Turning to the forthcoming centennial of the Armenian Genocide, Sahakyan thanked the Greek parliament for recently adopting a law on the criminalization of the denial of genocides. He also stressed the importance of the senior Greek officials’ participation in the Armenian Genocide 100th anniversary commemoration events to be held next year in capital city Yerevan.

In turn, President Karolos Papoulias spoke about the Armenian-Greek friendship, and noted that the two peoples have supported and assisted one another in their fights against common enemies.

Reflecting on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Greek president noted that his country’s respective position is clear, and added that both Armenians and Greeks wish to maintain civilized relations with neighboring countries.

Papoulias also underscored the role of parliamentary diplomacy in the deepening of cooperation between Armenia and Greece. He considered the military cooperation exemplary, but noted that there is a lot of work to do in trade and economic cooperation.
