Speaking to RTS TV of Switzerland, world-renowned French-Armenian singer, songwriter, actor, public activist, and diplomat Charles Aznavour, who is Armenia’s Ambassador to Switzerland, expressed an indignation over the Turkish denial of the Armenian Genocide, and appealed to Turks and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

To the program host’s question about whether reconciliation will ever be possible between the Armenians and the Turks, Aznavour responded: “Undoubtedly. It is necessary to do so, since we are people that are similar to each other in many ways. In addition, I think it’s ridiculous that today there is hatred on the one hand, and an absence of recollection and a constant lie on the other hand.”

The 90-year-old singer also expressed the hope that he will witness the reconciliation between Armenians and Turks before he dies. He recalled that Erdogan was invited for a visit to Armenia on April 24, 2015—that is, on the centennial of the Armenian Genocide—, but the Turkish president still has not responded.

“And if he goes, I’ll go with him,” Aznavour stated.

Addressing the Turkish president, the famous singer said: “[Genocide] denial costs very dear; that money can be spent on other things. These funds are stolen by the deniers, who know nothing. The deniers need to be hated. Denial is a very bad profession.”

Charles Aznavour also addressed the Turkish people. “We are brothers. We always have been brothers,” he stated adding that even though there were moments in history when the two peoples were separated, these moments need to be surmounted and the Armenian and the Turkish peoples need to start living together again.
