GYUMRI. – Virtually all small and medium-sized business merchants of Armenia’s Gyumri city once again assembled at the central market of the city, since early Wednesday morning, blocked the central streets, and declared a strike.

The merchants are protesting the amendments to the Law on Turnover Tax.

Over 500 Gyumri residents have gathered, and a large number of police officers are at the scene, too, the Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter informed from the location.

“We demand our MPs whom we elected at the time. Let them come, stand with us in our difficult day, and give the answer to our fight for the daily bread. We will stand [here] until a Shirak [Region] MP approaches,” the merchants stated in anger.

In their words, if the MPs come, they will march towards the Shirak Regional Governor’s Office.

There are four MPs who are elected from the Shirak Region, and by way of majority elections.

Pursuant to the amendments to the Law on Turnover Tax, which have come into force on Wednesday, a business enterprise will be warned at first, and, subsequently, it will be fined for not submitting a document on its commodity circulation. The large businesses, however, often do not provide documents to the small and medium-sized enterprises concerning the products. The government justifies these amendments with the need for taxing Armenia’s large businesses.
