YEREVAN. – If Armenia does not join the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU), problems may arise in bilateral relations with Russia.

Armenia-based Caucasus Institute Deputy Director, political analyst Sergey Minasyan stated the abovementioned at a press conference on Wednesday.

As per the political scientist, there are serious doubts among analysts on whether the EaEU will reach the objectives that are spoken about.

“In reality, entering the EaEU is due to security considerations for Armenia. If Russia wishes and stands ready to assume the material and political costs of this format, Armenia may join it,” Minasyan noted.

He added, however, that the fact that Armenia has no common customs border with this union is a serious problem in terms of the economic expedience of Armenia’s EaEU accession.

“On the other hand, the political factors are more important in this matter. It is also quite possible that this format be a formality and not cause problems for Armenia,” the analyst maintained.

To the query on whether Armenia will economically gain from joining this union, Minasyan responded: “Only the fact that Armenia’s accession becomes possible when exceptions are made on the customs clearance of about 1,000 products, already bespeaks how expedient it is for Armenia.”

He also recalled that Armenia has already received quite favorable conditions from Russia in energy prices.
