YEREVAN. - Policeman Edgar Varagyan charged for grand larceny and rape spit at the prosecutor on Monday during the trial over his case in Armenia’s Kentron and Nork-Marash Court, Armenian News - NEWS.am reports.
Prior to the hearings Varagyan spit at the prosecutor, which aroused a dispute and forced the court bailiffs and police officers accompanying the defendant to intervene. The defendant's attorney asked the court to dismiss the criminal case as, according to him, the materials of the criminal case indicated that his client’s guilt has not been proven. The defendant himself, who was supposed to have a speech in the courtroom, said that he did not have time to prepare for the speech.
“A chaos reigns in my prison cell, I do not have even a place to sleep, some days I sleep on the ground,” the defendant said.
He requested 30 days to prepare for a speech. The defendant also requested that the court provide presence of several government officials at his speech.
“As a policeman, I protected everyone, from the ordinary citizen to the president, and today I am on trial. I demand the presence of [Armenia’s] Minister of Justice, Attorney General, Police Service Chief, head of the Police Department of Special Investigations, [opposition] MP Nikol Pashinyan, [political figure] Paruyr Hayrikyan, as well as the Ombudsman. This case is fabricated and I want everybody to see it,” said the defendant.
The judge noted that he has no jurisdiction to force people not related to the case, to be present in the court, and denied the defendant’s motion. Edgar Varagyan has been provided with 15 days period to prepare his speech.
According to the indictment, in September 23, 2013, Edgar Varagyan broke the window in Carolyn Baghumyan’s house, invaded into the house armed with the knife and a toy pistol that resembled a real pistol. Varagyan tied Carolyn Baghumyan and her teenage daughter with a duct tape, took all gold and other jewelry, kidnapped tied mother and daughter and took them to the Kotayk region, where he raped Carolyn Baghumyan and left Baghumyan mother and daughter in the wilderness.
