Czech portal Idnes.cz published an article about destruction of the Holy Martyrs Armenian Church in Deir ez-Zor by the Islamic State.

“Last month the extremists destroyed Christian monument in Syria's Deir ez-Zor that was a holy site for Armenians. The memorial housed remains of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Extremists justified their actions by the fact that the monument contradicts Islam,” the article says.

The Islamist fighters promised to blast similar memorials, and several Muslim, Christian, Jewish monuments have been already destroyed.

This place has nearly the same meaning for Armenians, as Auschwitz for the Jews,” the author quotes Czech political analyst Tomas Šmíd.

The author mentions that the church was functioning as a cemetery and as a place of pilgrimage.

Destruction of the memorial complex has not sparked a massive public outcry, the article says. The act was criticized by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and later by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
