The younger generation in the Nagorno-Karabakh can not live otherwise than in a free and independent country without overwhelming and discriminatory policies of Baku , reads the article published by Armenian Ambassador to Argentina Vahagn Melikyan in “La Nación” newspaper.

“The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, the Karabakh people and government in the 23rd year of independence continue to defend their right to self-determination in the territories where the Armenians live since the Armenian nation has been formed. Once, as a result of one-sided and unfair decision in 1923, Karabakh was included in the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, the life of the Armenian population of historical Artsakh has changed dramatically. Their ethnic and national rights have been violated, the language and cultural traditions were severely limited and it was forbidden to pray in medieval Armenian monasteries and churches,” the article reads.

The article mentions legal basis for declaration on independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, following Armenian pogroms in Sumgait and threats to entire Armenian population of Azerbaijan.

“More than 20 years of independence enabled to build and develop democracy, to create public authorities, to balance the branches of government, to hold free and fair democratic elections,” Melikyan said.

With regard to the negotiations for a peaceful settlement of the conflict, the article highlights the importance of OSCE Minsk Group format, as well as the maintenance of ceasefire which has recently been frequently violated by the Azerbaijani side.
