YEREVAN. – The Armenian Genocide is not on the agenda of the international organizations dealing with human rights. Artak Kirakosyan, Chairman of the Civil Society Institute, believes the issue is considered as a political problem.

Not much is done in the field of conflict prevention, and the first direction the Institute is focused on is recognition of the Armenian Genocide, he said during presentation of a project of the Armenian UN Association.

Kirakosyan said that their organization had achieved that adoption of a 2-point declaration together with the Turkish human rights organization: a) to recognize the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire, b) to open the border wioth any preconditions.

The next area of activity of civil society is to pay attention to the International Criminal Court so that Armenia finally ratified the Rome Statute that will also help to prevent genocide. .

Another direction, Kirakosyan said, is Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, in particular provocations against civilians.

“One of the problems is police brutally, and nothing seems to have changed. The problem is violence in schools that continues to the army and reaches the parliament. We are working with six schools and teachers, trying to show children that the world is not ideal, but one can make changes even without violence,” he said.
