Elections of new members of UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT) took place on October 23 at the United Nations in Geneva.

Arman Danielyan, the President of Civil Society Institute NGO (Armenia), was reelected as SPT member for four years’ term. He has been a member of Subcommittee since 2011.

SPT is one of the United Nations mechanisms directed to the prevention of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Member States. The Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture, Cruel and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT) gives the SPT the right to visit all places of detention in those States and examine the treatment of people held there.

SPT has 25 members and it is the largest UN Treaty Body. More than 70 states have joined OPCAT including Republic of Armenia.

Arman Danielyan is the first Armenian expert who is represented in the SPT, following the ratification of OPCAT in 2006 by Armenia.
