YEREVAN. – Moscow has never raised the issue of granting a status of an official language to Russian, co-chair of Armenian-Russian inter-parliamentary commission Nikolay Ryzhkov said in Yerevan.

“Frankly speaking it is the first time I hear about any forceful moves on the status of Russian language in Armenia, and moreover granting a status of an official language. Armenia is a country having its official language. In addition, Armenia is a mono-ethnic country. May be someone said something. Do not listen to them,” he said.

Another thing is that the Russian language plays a big role in the life of Armenians in Russia.

“Let's be frank. How many Armenians live in Russia? Apparently as much as in Armenia. They all speak Russian. All of them are wealthy people having high positions in science and culture. We are happy about the fact that they know Armenian and Russian. We are brothers, and brother should speak the language of a brother. If you do not want to speak Russian, just do not do it. But in times of globalization, refusal from foreign languages is not leading to positive consequences,” Ryzhkov said.
