An Armenian delegation, led by Minister of Justice Hovhannes Manukyan, is in Russia, from Thursday to Saturday, on a working visit.

The minister on Thursday met with director Gennady Kornienko of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service.

Kornienko noted that Armenia is an important partner for Russia, and he reflected on the multi-sectoral bilateral cooperation.

Manukyan, for his part, presented the ongoing reforms which the Armenian Ministry of Justice is implementing in the penitentiary system, and the respective current state of human rights in the country. The minister added that Armenia’s forthcoming accession to the Russia-led Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union assumes a further invigoration of cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

Subsequently, the interlocutors discussed several matters of mutual interest. In addition, agreements were reached to undertake practical steps for relevant staff training and to collaborate in acquiring security devices for the penal system.

Upon the proposal of the Armenian minister of justice, it also was decided to sign a memorandum of collaboration between the correctional institutions of the two countries.
