YEREVAN. – The world-renowned French Carrefour hypermarket chain’s entry into Armenia will bring along several serious problems, Hraparak daily reported.

“Carrefour requires huge discounts from suppliers [in Armenia]. The suppliers [therefore] have a cause for concern because they will lose a huge market by not supplying their products to Carrefour.

“Recently, however, new developments have taken place in this domain. SAS and Yerevan City, which are two of the largest supermarket chains in [capital city] Yerevan, have decided to likewise make similar requirements to the suppliers so as to prevent this totalitarian oppressive policy of Carrefour.

“[And] the result of all this will be that the prices of the products will increase sharply [in Armenia] because the suppliers and the manufacturing companies cannot lower the prices at the expense of their profits,” Hraparak wrote.
