YEREVAN. – The radical Islamist movement is becoming the biggest problem in Azerbaijan, since there are substantial disagreements among different religious denominations in the country.

Azerbaijani Studies specialist Sargis Asatryan noted the aforementioned at a press conference on Wednesday.

In his words, numerous groups are established in the social networks, and which are calling to join the Islamic State.

“The radicals have been planted roots in Azerbaijan, established links with the local businessmen and officials, [and] are working closely with them.

“There is also information that the radical religious movements have created a large chain of supermarkets in [capital city] Baku,” Asatryan said.

In the analyst’s view, it is hard to say what will happen in Azerbaijan if the control of President Ilham Aliyev’s regime weakens in the country.
