YEREVAN. – As per Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) MP and businessman Manvel Badeyan, the country’s forthcoming accession to the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) is not surprising because the incumbent authorities have always stated this.

Badeyan stressed, at a press conference on Tuesday that, by entering the EEU, Armenia will also resolve its security issue by receiving security guarantees from its ally, Russia.

Former MP and ex-chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, analyst Hovhannes Igityan, on the other hand, reminded the RPA deputy that it was just two years ago when the authorities were stating that Armenia was heading towards the European Union Association Agreement.

“As for security guarantees, [President] Serzh Sargsyan announced, on September 3 [, 2013], that we [, Armenia,] were told: ‘If you don’t enter the EEU, you’ll be in the role of Ukraine.’

“And about the CSTO [i.e., the Collective Security Treaty Organization], I will say: Where are they when the [Azerbaijani] saboteurs are entering our country, when they [, the Azerbaijanis,] are shooting down a[n] [Armenian] helicopter? Where are they?” Igityan stated.
