YEREVAN. – It is disturbing that the political forces in Armenia did not react in timely fashion to Monday’s brutal murder in Gyumri city, political analyst Styopa Safaryan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

In his words, it was solely the opposition Heritage Party which aptly reacted to this incident, whereas there is an unfathomable silence in the case of the other political forces in the country.

“[But] it was not mandatory for this incident to occur in order for us to realize that our political forces are not acquainted with the main events in the country. They spent obediently and silently the dangerous periods for us,” Safaryan specifically noted.

As per the analyst, the silence of political forces likewise is a matter of national security. According to Styopa Safaryan, if the silence of Armenia’s ruling party is somewhat understandable in this case, such a demeanor by the country’s political opposition is incomprehensible.

As reported earlier, six members of the Avetisyan family—including a two-year-old girl—were shot dead, and a six-month-old baby boy was wounded in their house in Gyumri on Monday. Valery Permyakov, a serviceman of the 102nd Russian Military Base in the city, stands accused in this crime. Permyakov was apprehended by the Russian border guards near the Armenian-Turkish border, and he was arrested on Wednesday. Valery Permyakov is held in custody at the Russian military base.

The soldier is charged under Russian law, with “the murder of more than two people,” and “desertion with a service weapon.” The Investigative Committee of Armenia also has launched a criminal case on the murders.

The Prosecutor General’s Office had said Permyakov will face justice under Russian law, and this information provoked a wave of protests in Armenia, especially in Gyumri and capital city Yerevan.
