YEREVAN. – Over the last five to six years, about 30 to 35 thousand people have permanently emigrated from Armenia annually, demographer Ruben Yeganyan said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Yeganyan added that he sees no basis for a reduction in these numbers. In his words, however, the emigration rate may drop due to the current situation in Russia, and the visa bans which limit the flow of people into western countries.

The demographer also noted that according to various estimates, about one million people have left Armenia and not returned from 1990 to 2000.

“But the impact of the emigration is not limited to solely that. Significant is the fact that the age structures of those leaving and those staying are not equivalent,” Yeganyan noted. “The active productive age people—and men among them—have predominated among those leaving [Armenia].” He added that as a result, the reproduction rate has declined in the country.
