There is no return to Armenia-Turkey protocols, and hardly there will be any progress in relations this year, analyst Thomas De Waal told the Armenian service of the Voice of America.

However, some informal contacts continue to develop. These are small things, but they contribute to a better atmosphere, De Waal said.

As to the U.S. role in the process, senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment believes Washington can do something only when a new president comes to power.

When U.S. takes on the issue and puts efforts into it, and then suddenly the process fails, they have no appetite to come back to the issue again, De Waal added.
