YEREVAN. – Speaker of the Armenian parliament Galust Sahakyan on Wednesday received U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills.

Speaker congratulated the American ambassador on commencing his diplomatic mission in Armenia, and expressed a conviction that Mills will contribute to development of close relations between Armenia and U.S.

Sahakyan noted importance of developing ties and deepening cooperation with U.S. He gave high assessment of U.S. continuous support to strengthening of democratic institutes, civil society as well as to reforms and economy development. Speaker of the Armenian parliament stressed importance of U.S. role in regional security and stability, as well as in the Karabakh peace process as a co-chairing state of the OSCE Minsk Group.

Speaking about the events ahead of the Armenian Genocide Centennial, Sahakyan said he expects participation of a high level delegation from Washington. He also touched upon inter-parliamentary ties.

Ambassador Mills, in turn, assured that the United States continue being Armenia's partner and have determined stance on regional stability.

As to the April 24 events, Ambassador said the American nation stands by the Armenians and realizes importance of the canonization ceremony for the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide .
