YEREVAN. – All victims of genocides are planned to be remembered in Armenia on December 9 of every year.

The members of opposition Heritage Party and ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) National Assembly (NA) Factions have tabled relevant legislative amendments in parliament.

The co-author of this bill, RPA MP Artak Zakaryan, who is also Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, noted at Tuesday’s parliament session that Armenians, as a people who fight for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, respect other nations that have survived genocides and felt that pain.

As per Zakaryan, Armenia fights for the international recognition of not solely the Armenian Genocide, but of all crimes against humanity, and against their denial.

December 9 is selected as the Remembrance Day of Genocides because it was on this day in 1948 that the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was adopted.

“There already are days of remembrance of the victims of genocides in the world,” Artak Zakaryan stated. “[But] we want to pay tribute to the victims of all these crimes.”
