Alper Aktas, the Consul General of Turkey in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, is concerned by the plans of Haskovo city authorities.

The Haskovo authorities want to name the municipal park “Armenians,” Trud daily of Bulgaria reported citing Mayor Georgi Ivanov.

Even though Aktas is asking for a meeting with Ivanov ever since Monday, the municipal authorities have refused to meet with him.

“We cannot allow another state to meddle in what should be named in our city, and how. We have a large Armenian community and an Armenian church, too,” the mayor of Haskovo stated. “We [also] have several honorary citizens of Armenian descent. Why should we not name a park in their honor?”

The city hall, however, does not understand how the Turkish consul had learned about this plan, since the voting on this matter is slated for Friday.
