YEREVAN. – Armenia will need extra 500 megawatts of additional power generation by 2020, Ms Laura Bailey, WB country manager for Armenia, told the media on Tuesday in Yerevan, quoting WB estimations.

This demand, she added, can be best met through building a new gas-fired power plant.

“To that end, we will help the Government to conduct a technical assessment, which will help them to come to a decision point,” she added.

Today the country’s installed generating capacity totals 4,200 MW, of which only 55% (2,300 MW) is operational.

On Tuesday, the bank has approved a loan of $52 million, under the Electricity Transmission Network Improvement Project. A significant part of WB’s commitment will be spent on a major rehabilitation of the substation serving Yerevan Thermal Power Center, which generates around 20% power in the country.

For now it’s early to tell whether the substation will be able to transfer electricity from a possible new station, which may become the second new power unit of the existing Yerevan Thermal Power Center.

“Anyway, the rehabilitation will get the station to the state-of-the-art level, which will enlarge its transferring capacity,” said Mr Arthurr Kochnakyan, WB Team leader of the project.
