YEREVAN. – Armenia may become a regional base for thermal power plants (TPPs).

Ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (NA) Faction member Vardan Ayvazyan, who is also Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, stated the above-said at the parliament on Tuesday.

In his words, the country’s potential energy capacity can be increased by 2,000 megawatts, and by way of rebuilding the Hrazdan TPP and building the second energy unit of the Yerevan TPP.

And in the case when Armenia today makes use of about 1.8 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas and 400 million cubic meters of Iranian gas per year, if the main gas pipeline is rebuild, the volume of gas received can reach 4 to 4.5 billion cubic meters.

“The projects of exporting the [Armenia] TPPs’ electricity are combined with the project of constructing new electricity transmission lines from Armenia to Georgia,” Ayvazyan noted, and added: “This means that new opportunities are emerging.”

He added that the potential investments into this construction are discussed.
