UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon considers the slaughter of Armenians by Ottoman Turks one hundred years ago “atrocity crimes,” but he is not supporting Pope Francis’ description of the killings as “the first genocide of the 20th century,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Monday.

He said the secretary-general calls upon countries to collaborate “with a view to establishing the facts about what happened should strengthen our collective determination to prevent similar atrocity crimes from ever happening in the future.”

In Dujarric’s words, however, the UN Secretariat will consider the Pope’s aforementioned description of the killings, reported TASS news agency of Russia.

He added that Ban Ki-moon acknowledges the sensitivity of qualifying what had occurred.
