Pope Francis will come to Armenia next year. Director of the Inter Church Relations Department of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, Bishop Hovakim Manukian, stated the above-said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“The information, according to which the Pope was invited to Armenia to be on hand on April 24 [i.e. the Armenian Genocide Centennial], is inaccurate,” Bishop Manukian said, and added: “The Armenian Apostolic Church invited the Pope to come to Armenia at his convenience.”

Reflecting on Turkey’s reaction to Pope Francis’ message, in which he recognized the Armenian Genocide, Bishop Manukian noted that Turkey, understanding the influence of the Vatican, had started putting pressure on the Holy See beforehand.

“Turkey attempted to terminate any process on the Armenian Genocide topic, but the Pope not only used the term ‘genocide,’ he also called on the entire international community to recognize the Armenian Genocide,” he said.

Bishop Hovakim Manukian also informed that 38 church delegations, seven church leaders, archbishops, the Metropolitan of Saint Petersburg, Russia, and the Bishop of London will arrive in Armenia to attend the Armenian Genocide Centennial commemorations on April 24.
