The Surp (Holy) Giragos Armenian Church of Diyarbakir, Turkey, has received a prestigious European award.

The European Commission and Europa Nostra have announced the recipients of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage, reported the Demokrathaber website of Turkey.

The award was given to the Armenian church in the “protection” category.

It was noted that the fact that the local authorities, the local population, and the Armenian community had assisted in the restoration of this church had become a contributing factor for receiving this prize.

To note, the Surp Giragos Church, which is one of the largest churches in the Middle East, has reopened as a church.
