YEREVAN. – Pope Francis’ statement about the Armenian Genocide transfers genocide to the nuance of world Christian history; this was a universal and an all-Christian development. Caucasus Institute Director, political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan, stated the above-said at a press conference on Wednesday.

In his words, the recent Vatican mass devoted to the Armenian Genocide victims is completely different from what the media present.

“This event is considered to be among the genocide recognition statements made by the representatives of various countries. At the same time, however, this was a much larger statement, and its subtext was completely different.

“This statement was not among the expansion of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. The Pope of Rome is not a politician; he is a global spiritual leader.

“He classified Armenia, the Armenian culture, the Armenian spiritual heritage equally with the world Christian values and the Universal Church; this was an extremely important development.

“He does not petition to Armenians alone; he says that the Genocide cannot be forgotten,” Iskandaryan specifically added.
