In an interview given to Armenian News – NEWS.am, the Austrian MEP and the Foreign Affairs Committee member Ulrike Lunacek shared her viewpoint on the adoption by the European Parliament of the resolution on Armenian Genocide, also touching upon her personal responsibility in that matter and Turkey’s further steps.

Please tell us in a few words your opinion about such an important event, namely the adoption  of the Resolution on the Armenian Genocide by the European Parliament.

The overwhelming majority for this resolution in the European parliament shows the European solidarity and grievance with the Armenian people and the need to commemorate and designate the events of 1915 again as genocide.

To what extent will the resolution counterbalance Turkish denial policy?

It is a very clear message! But this big support for the resolution should not be interpreted as a sign of hostility toward Turkey or the Turkish government today. In contrary, the resolution welcomes the statements of Erdogan and Davutoglu offering condolences and recognising atrocities against the Ottoman Armenians as a step in a right direction. But the resolution is also demanding further steps: the opening of the archives in Turkey, to recognise the Armenian genocide and to pave the way for reconciliation between Turkish and Armenian peoples.

What will you do next?

I will stand on this message and as an Austrian, and due to the past of my own country as a former ally of the Ottoman Empire in that time, I have the special responsibility to encourage historical research about this tragedy also in my country.
