YEREVAN. – The birth rate is declining in Armenia, and this trend is continuous, demographer Ruben Yeganyan said at a press conference on Saturday.
In his words, the day is not too far away when the number of deaths will exceed that of births in the country.
“Today, we still see a positive growth; the number of births exceeds the number of deaths by 14 thousand. [But] the situation will change in five to ten years.
“The total population [of Armenia] is declining on the account of [e]migration. Armenia’s population dwindles by one percent per annum.
“The number of working-age people [in the country] decreases; that is, the labor resource is lessening,” Yeganyan noted.
As a solution to this problem, the demographer stated that it is indispensible to promote an increase in Armenia’s birth rate, albeit it is difficult to guarantee a respective result.
