All six factions of the Parliament of Austria have joined forces to issue a joint statement which condemns the Armenian Genocide that occurred in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire, reported Der Standard newspaper of Austria.

The document notes that the former Austria-Hungary, being an ally of the Ottoman Empire in the First World War, also bears the historical accountability for what had occurred.

The Austrian parliamentary factions’ joint statement also recalls the genocides of other Christians—Assyrians, Arameans, and Pontic Greeks—in the Ottoman Empire.

The statement notes that Austria is obligated to describe what had occurred as genocide and to condemn it.

The document will be debated at the Parliament of Austria on Wednesday.

As reported earlier, during the parliament’s plenary session, the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) will table a resolution that condemns the Armenian Genocide. ÖVP Faction Head Reinhold Lopatka and SPÖ MP Andreas Schieder have made a proposal to debate this document in the Parliament of Austria.
