YEREVAN. – Armenia welcomes the statement which the Austrian parliament adopted, and in connection with the 100th anniversary of the genocide committed against Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Edward Nalbandian, has noted the aforesaid.

“The Parliament of Austria stresses that (…) it considers it its obligation to recognize these horrific events as genocide, and to condemn [them].

“The Parliament of Austria, in its statement, stresses that it is also Turkey’s obligation to recognize the crime committed against the Armenians as genocide.

“Austria, with this step, made an important contribution to the noble cause of the prevention of genocides and crimes against humanity,” Nalbandian specifically noted.

As reported earlier, the Austrian parliament started its work Wednesday with the minute of silence to honor victims of the Armenian Genocide.

In addition, six factions of the parliament adopted a joint statement and recognized the Armenian Genocide.

The president of the National Council of Austria, Doris Bures, said this statement was a call for reconciliation between the Armenians and the Turks. She used the term “genocide” while speaking about the events in 1915.

The statement notes that Austria is obligated to describe what had occurred as genocide and to condemn it.
