YEREVAN. – The President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, on Wednesday met with Thorbjørn Jagland, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE).

The talk was held along the lines of the two-day International Social and Political Global Forum against the Crime of Genocide. This forum is devoted to the Armenian Genocide Centennial, and it got underway Wednesday in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan.

Sargsyan highly appreciated Jagland’s participation in and contribution to this forum which, as per the President, reaffirms the CoE’s role in the protection of fundamental human rights.

The Armenian President once again wished success to Jagland in his second term in office as the CoE Secretary General, and noted that Jagland has started quite major and deep reforms. Sargsyan also assured that Armenia stands ready to continue its assistance to the CoE reforms which its secretary general had launched.

At the ensuing talk, the interlocutors reflected on the Armenian Genocide Centennial, its message, and the respective events being held.

They also discussed the current regional and international matters, Armenia-Turkey relations, and the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. In connection with the latter, the CoE chief stressed that the CoE fully supports the OSCE Minsk Group efforts to resolve the Karabakh conflict, and it underscores the dialogue between the conflicting parties to achieve peace.

Thorbjørn Jagland, for his part, thanked the President of Armenia for inviting him to the aforesaid Yerevan global forum, and noted that it is a great honor for him to attend and address this important event.
