The Parliament of the Flemish Region (one of the regions of Belgioum) almost unanimously adopted a resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Only three MPs abstained, the Belgian newspaper HLN reports. On a state level, Belgium recognized the Armenian Genocide back in 1998.

The text of the resolution is based on that of the document recently adopted by the European Parliament. In the text, the MPs do not call on the Flemish government to address Turkey for the Genocide recognition, but it clearly infers that the  Flemish Parliament approves any effort by Turkey aimed at recognition, the newspaper reports.

But the main message of the resolution is the reconciliation, the author of the initiative Karim van Overmeire said. “In this resolution we want to look ahead. We call on the Flemish government to present to Armenia and turkey successful examples of reconciliation between European nations. We want establishment of relations between Turkey and Armenia through diplomatic ties,” he said.
