YEREVAN. – President of Russia Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to the Armenian nation who suffered one of the most terrible chapters in the history of the twentieth century (PHOTOS).

Speaking at a memorial event at Tsitsernakaberd, the Russian president said that 1.5 million Armenians fell victims of the tragedy. Over 600,000 were forcibly deported and persecuted. Cultural monuments, books and manuscripts have been destroyed. The incident shocked the world, Putin said.

“Russia perceives the suffering as its own pain. Millions of refugees have been sheltered by Russia,” Putin said.

The Russian leader stressed that it was the Russian diplomacy that achieved international condemnation of the tragedy, by initiating a statement together with France and Britain.

He called the Armenian Genocide “a crime against humanity and civilization”. According to him, over 2,000 commemorative events, involving not only members of the Armenian Diaspora, but also representatives of other nations, are being held in the hundreds of Russian cities.

“Russia remains consistent in its position. We always thought that there is no justification for mass murders,” Putin emphasized.
