The German government, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, has called for the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations.

Government Spokesperson Steffen Seibert announced that Germany wishes to assist in the rapprochement between the two sides.

Unlike German President Joachim Gauck, however, Seibert did not use the term “genocide,” reported Deutsche Presse Agentur.

As reported earlier, President Gauck on Thursday used the word “genocide” for the first time to describe what had occurred to the Armenians at the turn of the 20th century. And at Friday’s German Bundestag (Parliament) session, Bundestag President Norbert Lammert likewise used the term “genocide.”

According to the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, still no respective reaction has been received from Turkey.
