Bulgarian Parliament didn’t recognize the killings of 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as genocide, local newspaper Btv Novinite reports.

Earlier, during the Friday sitting, MPs didn’t adopt the resolution on recognizing the Armenian Genocide proposed by nationalist-conservative party Ataka. GERB and ABV parties abstained.

Upon the proposal of GERB, MPs adopted a declaration, in which the words “annihilation of groups of people on racial, religious and other grounds” were replaced with ‘mass killings'. This amendment received 157 votes in favor, and 36 against. Movement for The Rights and Freedoms (MRF) party of Bulgarian Turks boycotted even that amended draft and walked out of the room.

Nevertheless, April 24 was acknowledged as Victims Remembrance Day.

The draft resolution on recognition of the Armenian Genocide had been proposed by Ataka party.

The word ‘genocide’ was replaced by ‘mass killings’ upon the proposal of GERB MP Tsveta Karayancheva.

Several hours earlier, when voting for the previous draft, MRF MPs had also left the room, accompanied by ironical outcries from Ataka party.
