YEREVAN. – The major overhaul of Armenia’s Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant will get underway in 2017.

The Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Armenia, Areg Galstyan, on Wednesday told the aforesaid to reporters in the National Assembly.

Galstyan stated this while presenting the agreement ($270 million loan plus $40 million grant) to extend the “life” of this nuclear plant.

The abovementioned Armenian-Russian intergovernmental agreement was signed in February in Moscow, and this document shall be ratified by both countries’ parliaments.

In 2015 and 2016, preparations will be carried out within the framework of the loan program. And in 2017, the nuclear plant will undergo a major overhaul for six months.

Pursuant to the agreement, the period of operation of the Armenian nuclear plant will be extended for ten years, until 2026. In the meantime, a new nuclear energy unit will be built.
