EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said Turkey's ambitions to join the Union may be complicated after Ankara's “harsh” criticism of the European countries in connection with the Armenian Genocide, Reuters reported.

Turkey's reaction is considered in the context of upcoming elections, Hahn said in an interview with Austrian Der Standard newspaper.

“This may be quite popular in parts of the country and among certain parts of the population. But what worries me are the long-term consequences. The seeds of an anti-European and anti-Western stance are thus sown, which from today's perspective makes a future (EU) entry very difficult,” he said.
