YEREVAN. – There can be difficulties and disappointments in combating corruption, but Armenia must be confident that EU will support the relevant institutions, the civil society of the country in order to achieve progress in the control system, EU Ambassador said.

Traian Hristea, head of EU delegation to Armenia, noted there is no country or region with no corruption, and Armenia is not exception.

“Corruption is closely associated with the country and leads to different negative effects in general. Corruption has also political consequences,” Hristea said.

Therefore, the EU, he continued, undertakes commitment to assist governments in the fight against corruption.

“But in order to register success, Armenia should move simultaneously in a number of areas. Without political commitment, the efforts of international agencies and donors will have no result. Therefore, the EU encourages the steps taken by the leadership of Armenia,” Hristea said,

He added that the European Union welcomed the establishment of the Anti-Corruption Council in Armenia and, of course, will monitor progress in the future.

The diplomat added that EU is not here to lecture, but to present its experience, while respecting the sovereign right and sovereign political choice of the Armenian people.
