YEREVAN. - Upon the completion of the North-South Road Corridor, the main freight traffic between Armenia and Georgia will shift from the border crossing point Bagratashen to that of Bavra, First Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication Artur Araqelyan said in the Parliament on Thursday.

Nevertheless, normally Bagratashen crossing point should also remain, Araqelyan said. For that very reason Armenia has initiated the construction of a new border bridge, which will be called “Friendship Bridge.” “We need to have as many modern passages to the neighboring country as possible,” the Deputy Minister said.

“The old bridge, which many of us have crossed, was built in 1960 and is now outdated but not in a critical condition. Besides, it is only 7m in width, and two large lorries cannot always pass it. Hence, the long queues. The new project will settle this issue,” Araqelyan said.

The construction of the Friendship Bridge on the Armenian-Georgian border costs about EUR 10 million. The construction sponsor from the Armenian side is the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development. The Georgian side agreed to provide around 60 per cent of the construction budget.
