The police made use of water cannons and tear gas to disperse protestors at Friday’s May Day rally in Istanbul, Turkey.

At Taksim Square, the demonstrators tried to stage a protest against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reported RFE/RL.

The protestors accuse Erdogan of exerting pressure ahead of Turkey’s next parliamentary election, which is slated for June 7.

The law enforcement did not allow the demonstrators to pass through the square, and as a result, clashes began between them.

The demonstrators threw stones at the police, and the latter responded by using water cannons and  tear gas.

A total of 203 people were detained and 24 others were injured, reported the Rosbalt news agency.
